Tenuta Antonini winery, passion and tenacity

Tenuta Antonini winery,
passion and tenacity

Simplicio, Luigi, Marco and Alessio.
Four generations of Antonini who have lived through different eras and completed different experiences, each contributing to build the foundations of what is now the Tenuta Antonini winery.

It all began immediately after the war, when Simplicio Antonini left full of hopes for the New World. In America, however, he really fails to make a fortune and returns to Italy, with enough in his pocket to buy a small piece of land. The heart, around which the current 30 hectares owned by the Tenuta Antonini winery rise.
In his imagination, there is still no idea of a family winery, but his choice is an expression of a strong awareness: the land as a solid foundation on which to build the future of the next generations.

History, however, seems to blame him. In the 1960s, when unfortunately it passed away, it was industry that dominated, with agriculture relegated to pop-up.
However, his son Luigi continues to work the land he inherited from his father: he plants olive trees and other crops, keeping their beauty and prosperity alive.

To Marco, and we come here much closer to the present day, Luigi hands down his passion for agriculture and respect for tradition. And he instills hope: that of seeing his grandfather’s dream come true soon, to create a family business.

At first, Marco’s path seems to diverge from this desire, since he is hired by a construction company. But nothing happens by chance: the owner also owns a cellar, “Villa Pigna” and decides to exploit the aptitudes of the young Marco right within this company.
Of which he will be director for over 20 years.

Rereading it with today’s eyes, this is the real turning point.

From intermediation to production

We arrive at 2003, the year in which Marco founds his own company and enters the wine sector as a protagonist. However, the company has a more commercial soul: it does not produce on its own, but deals with intermediation in the sector at an international level.
These are very important years because they allow Marco to acquire skills and knowledge, weave relationships, study and understand the markets.

When Alessio, his son, also officially enters the company, there is a strong new push. He is very attached to his grandfather Luigi and wants to retrace his footsteps, also thanks to all the knowledge accumulated next to his father.
He spends a lot of time on the family lands and is increasingly passionate about viticulture and olive growing. An idea emerges in his mind, which he shares with Marco: to fulfill his grandfather’s dream and start the Tenuta Antonini winery.

The rest is recent history. That of four generations of men who have carried out a life project step by step: to put the land and viticulture at the center of their present and their future.

Antonini winery,

Expression of the territory

Antonini winery, Expression of the territory

2003 is the year in which the Colline Teramane DOCG was established.
Its production area embraces the entire coastal and inland hills of the province of Teramo: the land of the Tenuta Antonini winery is located right in the center of this area particularly suited to viticulture.
The Adriatic on the one hand, the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga massifs on the other, are the natural boundaries of this DOCG and influence its characteristics.

The particular conformation of the territory on which the Colline Teramane DOCG area stands, in fact, favors the establishment of good ventilation which, associated with the excellent exposure, the good nature of the land and the absence of water stagnation, guarantees the indigenous vines optimal conditions to produce grapes of great quality and typicality.

The soils are mostly clayey-silty in nature with looser intercalations in the coastal part, with generally rather moderate slopes and good exposures.

Also noteworthy are the temperature variations between day and night, favored by the proximity of the Gran Sasso massif and the Monti della Laga, as well as the ventilation: both optimal conditions for the health of the grapes and the accumulation of aromatic substances in the bunches.

In every sip of the wines produced by the Tenuta Antonini winery, we find all the complexity of this territory, every nuance and every unmistakable trait.

Nature,
technology
and innovation

Owning the vineyards in an area so suited to viticulture certainly represents a differentiating element for the quality of the wines of the Tenuta Antonini winery: when Nature puts a lot of its own into it, it is already well advanced.

But that’s not enough. Because the climatic conditions are unpredictable and uncontrollable: relying solely on the naturalness of the vineyard can create many problems, both during the harvest and in the cellar.
Vintages that are too different from each other risk depriving a wine of its uniqueness and recognizability at first taste.

This is why in the Tenuta Antonini winery innovative technologies are used, both at the agronomic level and at the time of winemaking, to balance any distortions and produce wines that are indeed an expression of the territory, but in its best meaning.

Therefore, cutting-edge technologies in the cellar, such as cryomaceration which – by cold macerating the grapes – allows to attenuate light unpleasant characters, while increasing the expressiveness of the grape variety and enhancing its characteristics.

But also particular attention to the vineyard, with the application, for example, of the green manuring technique, which involves the sowing on the same row of some natural essences with the function of increasing the fertility of the soil: to choose the mix correctly, it is necessary to know depth of the soil, to provide it with the specific nourishment it needs, which differs from place to place.

In the Tenuta Antonini winery, agronomy and winemaking techniques go hand in hand, both with a single goal: to make use of the best and advanced technologies to enhance the most unique characteristics of a territory and modernize the final product, starting from native vines to produce wines ready to conquer your place in the world.
